blink.gif I saw in a magazine where they swapped out the OEM head studs on a '08 SD with studs ONE at a time WITHOUT taking the heads off?!?!?!? Has anyone trried this with a 6.0? It sure would be a F_ _ K OF A LOT easier than pulling the motor out or raising the cab if you have a pickup.

Be careful though they may have changed studs but didn't touch the headgasket or anything else for that matter. I think your refering to the artical in Diesel Power with the green 6.4L that they did!?

We have done the "one at a time" stud replacement on the 5.9L but have not tried it on a 6.0L. Usually when we are going in that far, the 6.0L gasket's are already leaking. You would still be required to lift the cab or pull the engine to do this though. There is not enough room to fit the studs in between with the cab/engine in place.
If you are not running crazy boost out of it, just delete the egr cooler. With it gone, your chances of blowing the head gasket's are drastically lower !! thumbsup_anim.gif

LOL, Or you could just build a project engine and put studs into it. Then once it's finished just swap out the engines. This is the route I'm going but I'm adding a lot more than just studs though but hence the name "project engine", lol. Another reason I'm going this way is because I don't want my truck down. Honestly though, I'm a member of a few boards and about 99% of the members will say don't do the 6.0L one stud at a time. Not sure why because you can do a 7.3L that way.

I came across this proceedure for removing / installing 6.0 heads without engine removal.
http://www.fordtechservice.dealerconnectio...ce_Tips_PSC.pdf
Now I was wondering if this could be a way to install studs without engine removal?? Gawd, I hope so!! Is there a differance in OEM head bolt total length and head stud total length??

The drivers side that they show is the easy side. (the guys here say their wives can do that side !! whistle.gif ) I'm curious how they do the other side with the heater box in the way ?? You can lift a cab or pull the motor faster than getting the heater box out of the way. Plus the quality of the work could suffer when trying these short cuts. It's a lot easier to work on when you can reach everything rather than trying to twist & force to save some time.

Here is a post where the person did what you are asking.

http://powerstrokenation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69469

It can be done but I am pretty sure the firewall needs to be massaged a little to get the back studs in.....

FWIW snapon makes a tourqe wrench extention just for tourqing studs on the 6.0 with the cab on.
